"Improving People's Lives with our Simple Solutions"

As I reflect on my travels from this past week, I wanted to tell you about a group of extraordinary people I met. A group of legally blind individuals who were full of life, excitement, and adventure. We had all been invited by the Toyota Mobility Foundation to experience a weekend of accessibility technology. My company, NuEyes, was there to present our solutions for low vision and blind people. These people had been invited to try out what we had to offer and provide feedback.

I was confident and excited, as I had demonstrated our products many times and know how well they work for people with all levels of visual impairment.

However, at NuEyes we are constantly innovating and improving. We had challenged ourselves to add a new tool; a simple navigation app to help the visually impaired navigate their surroundings with the help of a cane. Nothing too advanced, just visual, and verbal directions. We were sure that this would provide at least some assistance.

Our demo was situated near a racetrack in Japan, and, as luck would have it, the noise from the race drowned out the audio in our app. On top of that, our pace was off, and the navigation was in chaos.

But we repositioned and adjusted, and something magical happened.

Our first tester was a woman who was completely blind and relied on her cane as well as an aid to guide her. As she put on our glasses and followed our app's instructions, the world changed for her. Using just her cane and our navigation app she was walking freely around the resort. Her pace picked up and she was moving with ease, getting more excited with every step. When she finished the course, she jumped for joy. She wanted to do it again and again, more thrilled with each completion.

Seeing her success and enthusiasm, others began to line up to try our solution. Each one was excited at the freedom it brought and the life-changing potential it could achieve. They were excited to provide us with invaluable feedback and suggestions to help improve our app. Ideas we could never have come up with on our own.

It was so inspiring to see how dramatically we could improve people's lives with our simple solution. And we will use their suggestions to continue to push the limits, enhancing what we created even further.

Small steps can make such a big difference. I am so humbled and proud to be a part of a company that can create such powerful changes in the lives of others.

There has been a lot of talk recently about devices being a “solution looking for a problem”. These devices tend to have great technology but can quickly start collecting dust as they don’t have repeatable use. However, at NuEyes Technologies we have always been focused on using technology to solve problems and enhance the human experience. Our belief is, if we focus on existing use cases and the challenges users face, we can build products that people want to use.

In 2016 we started as a software company enhancing the vision of those who are legally blind using augmented reality smart glasses. The idea came about when our Founder, Mark Greget witnessed the challenges that those with visual impairments faced when using existing assistive technologies. These technologies were cumbersome, stationary, and focused on a single task. His vision of using smart glasses as assisted technology provided our users with easier access to technology, more freedoms, and less reliance on assistance. Built in conjunction with our users and medical advisor we have achieved a leading platform for the visually impaired. Our CEO’s approach focused on the challenges and problems he saw with existing use cases resulted in a product that enhances the human experience and creates a solution that is be used by thousands globally.

Since the introduction of our first software product, we have stayed focused on understanding our users, solving problems, enhancing the human experience, and delivering products that have a purpose. Our NuLoupes AR smart glasses are focused on the same ideals of solving a problem by enhancing the experience.

We chose to focus on the existing use case of loupes as we observed the challenges users faced. The modern traditional analog surgical loupe has been around since the 1800s and while it provides precision fixed magnification, it’s design can provide challenges and increase user fatigue. Traditional loupes have limited field of view, focal length, and lack the power of the digital world. Understanding these challenges and working directly with doctors, dentists, and practitioners we set out to build the best surgical loupe product.

The advantage of having an existing use case is it provides us with a built-in audience and allows us to understand the challenges users face. Having an existing use case also provides us with valuable information on what currently works with the product, this element is key to keeping the new product familiar, intuitive, and accessible to the user. Our understanding how variable magnification can enhance the experience for users makes the users transition from being interested to needing to buy easy. It also is an important starting point to providing the user with a product superior to what they have today.

As we continue to dissect the use case, we can gain a better understanding for how NuLoupes can enhance the experience and increase its value to the user. Our 3D pass-through stereoscopic camera system not only provides continuous variable magnification but delivers hyper precise depth perception surpassing that of the human eye, once again providing the user with an enhanced experience they could not receive with any other device.

We also focused on the ergonomics of the device. Listening to the users provides them with the ability to reduce neck and back strain, helping with fatigue and avoiding potential health problems. These are things we understand not because we know technology but because we understand the use case and how we can use technology to enhance the current experience.

While NuLoupes also introduces a digital ecosystem, not available on traditional loupes that will spark additional innovation, it is not the key to its consumption in the marketplace but an additional benefit of introducing advanced technology. The success of NuLoupes will be driven by the enhanced experience to a defined use case and the technology is just how that experience is delivered.

We love technology and stay curious about how we can integrate technology into our daily lives and the lives of others. However, we can’t lead with technology, we can’t make technology the reason for being, we must understand the challenges, problems, and experiences first. The Revolutionary impact of 3D Stereopsis in Augmented Reality

Stereopsis refers to the ability of the human brain to receive, process and perceive depth information from the eyes. It is how we understand the distance of the step down of a curb or when something is flying toward us. We use when taking a sip of our morning coffee or slowing down in time to let a pedestrian cross the street. The use of stereopsis in concert with the human motor neuron and sensory system to perform physical tasks accurately within actual 3D space is crucial in everyday life.

The human visual perception system is amazing in its capability to decern depth using only stereopsis without the aid of other depth cues such as relative size, shading, occlusion, and movement. The human brain recognizes depth perception due to the horizontal separation of the eyes which exploits a phenomenon known as parallax. The wider the horizontal separation of a person’s interpupillary distance, the better the depth perception capability. The ability to perceive depth information (stereopsis) is made possible by the visual cortex of the brain which is developed in infancy. We are not born with the inherent ability to perceive depth, however, once developed, the human system is so accurate that it registers the slightest movement of each eye position as each eye converges and focuses on an exact point in 3-dimensional space.

While we might take it for granted throughout history, we have incorporated stereopsis to give images and entertainment more depth. It was 1896 View scope was granted a patent for their viewer to provide depth in images. In the 1950’s Kodak produced Stereo cameras and slide projectors to capture the world in 3D and who can forget the ViewMaster by Mattel from the 70’s to view scenes from our favorite cartoons and places. Stereopsis , while it is something we can see naturally however when viewing images and video we only see in two dimensions as most systems are only capturing a single image.

Recognizing the importance of stereopsis capability, researchers and innovators in the medical community have made significant strides in enhancing surgical visualization by harnessing this fundamental aspect of human vision. Without incorporation of stereopsis in medical digital visualization products surgeons and dentists would not be able to understand where their tools are in relationship to the patient’s tissue. NuEyes Technologies is at the forefront of this technology utilizing what we call Digital Stereopsis ^© .

The convergence point is the key reference point from which all depth information is calculated. At a target convergence point of 457 millimeters (18 inches), a youthful person with interocular spacing of 65 mm, can distinguish if an object is .5 mm in-front of or behind another. With Digital Stereopsis ^© , NuEyes gives a 75-year-old person the capability to perceive better than .3 mm in depth. Watching a new movie, reading a favorite book, seeing a loved one smile. Most people take these simple delights for granted, but not the one million American veterans with low vision .

James, an Army vet with severe low vision due to injuries he sustained while serving in the Gulf War, thought he would never see his granddaughter again — and he had never seen his wife’s face at all. By the time they met at a Veterans Administration (VA) Blind Rehabilitation clinic, James could only see lights and shadows. Then he was introduced to NuEyes , augmented reality (AR) smart glasses technology that leverages what little vision he has left and fills in the gaps, giving him his first clear look at the woman he loves.

NuEyes smart glasses are now used across a variety of industries, for everything from remote medicine to enterprise field operations, but the technology was created by veterans for veterans, and NuEyes continues to focus on improving its solution for veterans with low vision. Early on, NuEyes was built into bulky virtual reality (VR) headsets, but the latest model — the Pro3 — is a pair of lightweight smart glasses that can be plugged into any newer model Samsung tablet or smartphone for an immersive user experience.

“NuEyes is the only veteran-owned assistive technology company helping those with low vision,” says Mark Greget, a U.S. Navy veteran and founder and CEO of NuEyes Technologies, Inc. “To be able to bring new cutting-edge AR smart glasses, powered by Samsung devices, to our veterans to help with their vision needs is a big step toward providing them with the essential care they not only need, but deserve.”

How NuEyes works

After Greget retired from the military, he worked as a MedTech device rep. It was circa 2010, and the best solution for partially sighted patients at that time was a desktop magnifier. “It was a screen in front of your face, with a camera underneath and a little tray table, and you moved things around to make it bigger or smaller,” Greget recalls. “People would often ask me, ‘Why can’t someone come up with a pair of glasses that does the same thing?'”

Someone could do that, he realized — so he created a standalone headset to correct low vision. This solution restored vision for people with macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, ocular albinism, optic atrophy and other visual impairments. But these early devices were bulky and not practical for everyday use.

The next two generations of NuEyes devices were smaller and sleeker, but Greget wanted to “bring this technology into the 21st century” and create a solution that was more flexible, more functional and easier to use. So, NuEyes partnered with Samsung to create the Pro3 — an 88g pair of smart glasses with 4K displays and a 52-degree field of view that can be plugged into any newer Samsung device.

“Our ultimate goal was to take the supercomputer most people now carry in their pockets and turn it into a device that a veteran with low vision can use — and to make it an immersive, seamless experience. With the Pro3, you simply plug it into the Samsung device, and it starts up right away. You can see whatever is on the phone through the glasses, so you can check email, use the Bixby virtual assistant, watch streaming movies, download apps from the Google Play Store or do anything else that someone would do with a smartphone. You can also leverage the forward-facing camera to look around, magnify your loved ones’ faces, change the contrast, things like that.”

A life-changing experience for veterans losing their sight

Greget chose Samsung to be the “brains and compute pack of the smart glasses device” because Samsung “has the best smart devices on the planet, and a seamless user experience.”

“Not only are these powerful, cutting-edge devices, but they’re intuitive and easy to use, which is important for our customer. If you’re a veteran with low vision, you’re often already frustrated with life’s challenges, so having something that’s really, really easy to use is critical.”

Each Pro3 device ships with a Samsung Galaxy S21 or S22 smartphone, with the NuEyes patented software app already installed — so the solution is ready to go out of the box. But rather than selling directly to end users, NuEyes distributes the devices through the VA, where retina specialists and occupational therapists help veterans learn how to use their new accessibility tool.

“It’s purposefully a very hand-holding experience,” says Greget. “Not only because the users have low vision, but because this is the care they deserve. Our goal is to enable vets to regain their independence, so our local reps work closely with the VA to make sure the product works well for each user.”

New use cases for NuEyes

Since NuEyes went to market, leaders from various industries have inquired about using the technology for their businesses, but until recently, the company exclusively focused on low vision. That changed during the pandemic, and while under lockdown, Greget worked with NuEyes’ President of Operations Regina Chatman to map out new use cases for their technology.

“Over the past few years, we’ve launched solutions for things like remote medicine or remote assistance,” says Greget. “We’re working with medical device companies like Medtronic to provide 3D step-by-step directions for users. And most recently, we worked with Dolphin Medical Imaging to create a wireless ultrasound probe, powered by Samsung devices, that will help practitioners with point-of-care diagnostics and improve bedside care.”

Still, for Greget and Chatman, helping veterans is still the most rewarding part of the job. “When I was in my garage in 2013, trying to get this concept to work and failing somewhat miserably, my goal was to empower veterans with low vision. Three years later, I watched a woman who hadn’t played piano in 10 years put on our product and start playing in 10 minutes. She looked over at me and said, ‘This gives me so much power.’ I knew then that our technology could change lives. And with the Pro3 glasses and Samsung smartphones, veterans will be able to do even more things they haven’t done in years.”
